What are the steps to setup my Garmin and use it with my Power Plan on race day?

Best Bike Split + Garmin: A Step-by-Step Guide to Race-Day Perfection

There's nothing like rolling up to the start line with a dialed‑in race plan sitting right on your handlebars. Pairing your Best Bike Split (BBS) power targets with a Garmin head unit lets you stay locked on pacing-even if you only use the plan as a loose guide. Follow the walkthrough below (tested on an Edge 530; other units are similar) to make sure every watt and waypoint shows up exactly where you need it.

1. Install the BBS Power Target Data Field

  1. Open Garmin Connect IQ and install "BBS Power Target"

  2. Sync your device to push the field across.

  3. Confirm on your device by going to your device's Main Menu -> IQ Apps -> and verify that the BBS Power Target is listed

TIP Leave auto‑updates enabled so you always have the latest BBS logic.

2. Create a Dedicated "BBS Race" Activity Profile

  1. Settings -> Activity Profiles -> Create New

  2. Copy an existing profile (we use Road as a baseline)

  3. Rename it "BBS Race"

  4. Configure Data Screens

    • Disable ClimbPro (saves CPU; BBS handles pacing)

    • Disable Segments (prevents pop‑ups hijacking your display)

    • Add a BBS Screen with: Power (3s or 10s), Lap NP, BBS Power Target (IQ field), Cadence or HR if desired

3. Dial‑in Navigation Settings

  1. BBS Race -> Navigation

    • Map -> Popularity Map: Off

    • Routing -> Mode: Straight Line

    • Routing -> Lock on Road: Off

    • Recalculation (Edge 830/840): Off

    • Navigation Prompts: Text Only

    • Sharp Bend Warnings: Off

4. Connect BBS -> Garmin Connect & Push Your Course

  1. In Best Bike Split, go to Settings (upper‑right) -> Connect Garmin -> Connect Garmin (You will be taken to Garmin Connect. Please login to Garmin Connect, select the options to allow data to be shared between Garmin and Best Bike Split, click "Save", and then click "Agree".)

  2. Open your race plan, click "File Uploads" located in the right column, under Garmin click the "Power Course" button

  3. In the "Power Course Uploaded!" confirmation message, click the "Garmin Connect" link, then click on the new course, at the bottom of the course's details page click the "Send to Device" button. NOTICE If the course is missing from the Garmin Connect Courses page, you may need to clear/reset any filtering.

5. Verify Course Settings On‑Device

  1. Navigation -> Courses -> Course Options

    • Turn Guidance: Off

    • Off‑Course Warnings: Off

  2. Select your course -> Settings

    • Route Calculation: Not Cached (if Cached, choose Remove from Cache)

    • Always Display: Off

    • Course Points: On

NOTICE On the Edge 1050, some users must reset "Not Cached" each ride.

6. Race‑Day Workflow

  1. Choose Course -> verify "Not Cached"

  2. Pick "BBS Race" Activity Profile -> Start

  3. "Beg." appears until you hit the course start; then you'll see "Cont. to Next" briefly, followed by live power targets

  4. If targets never show (stuck on "Cont. to Next"), cached turn‑by‑turn data likely snuck back in. Revisit Step 5.

Navigate to Start?

  • Yes, if you will be riding up to and through the race plan's starting point. Meaning the race plan's starting point is out in front of you on the course.

  • No, if you will not be riding through the race plan's starting point. Meaning the race plan's starting point is NOT out in front of you on the course.

7. Quick Troubleshooting

  1. Power targets never appear: Clear course cache; confirm ClimbPro/Segments off.

  2. IQ field shows "Cont. To Next": Once you pass the next point (pop-up at bottom) it should updated if not it's likely a cache issue.

  3. Device beeps constantly: Disable Turn Guidance & Sharp Bend Warnings.

8. Final Checks & Backup Plan

  1. Print a one‑page cheat sheet with lap targets in case electronics fail.

  2. Pack a spare head‑unit mount bolt or zip tie-tiny parts.

  3. Charge everything to 100%, then hard‑reboot the Garmin the night before to clear stale caches.

Cached Route Issue

If your Power Target is not displaying correctly, it may be due to a new setting that Garmin recently introduced that caches the routes and doesn't allow the Power Targets to be recalculated.

To delete the cache, go to the course, then select the 3 dot menu and Routed Calculation. If it reads "Cached", select Remove from Cache.

  1. Select the Course -> 3 Dots Menu -> Route Calculation -> Cached -> Remove from Cache
